New Location Idea

Outside Location

Smaller Group

Our group originally consisted of 3 people; Jordan, Nicole and myself. We agreeed that we were not getting on with our work properly because we found ourselves chatting and getting off subject. This resulted in Jordan leaving our group, leaving just Nicole and I.

This meant we had to share out our roles and they are as follows:
Nicole: Cinematographer, Editor
Danielle: Organiser, Mise-en-scene, Director

Storyboard

Jordan and I decided to make a storyboard together and compare it to another storyboard which Nicole will create herself, to gain different ideas and as a group create a final storyboard, whether it being either mine or Nicoles, or ideas taken from both made into a new one.

1. (Introduction) In this shot the characters see eachother but take no notice of one another and continue walking in seperate directions. The light source is in the middle of them both, then as they seperate further the light gets dimmer.

2. This shows another boy talking to the girl but she shows no interest as the original boy glances over with disappointment. The light at the beginning is very dim because the boy is upset that the girl is talking to someone else. The lights get brighter with his realisation.

3. This shot is of both boy and girl arguing with their parents, showing they both go through the same trouble at home. This also highlights the rebellion of the punk rock culture.

4. The boy and girl express their love for one another and run away. The light is very bright as they're both happy.

5. The previous boy from shot 2 acts violently towards the main boy because he's jealous. The shots move at a fast pace to create tension.

6. In the last shot, the main boy stand up to the other boy and defeats him. The boy and girl are happy and walk away together.

Band's/Songs reception

All We Know Is Falling:

Allmusic: 3.5/5 stars
Kerrang!: 2/5 stars
Emotional Punk: 8/10 stars

- Gold certification
- Peaked at number 2 in Billboard Comprehensive Albums in 2005
- Peaked at number 51 in UK Albums Chart in 2010

"This album is an extremely strong debut, although it is a shame that it has been out for around a year. In general, the band has a strong punk/scene sound typical to their label. The first song is a strong, loud wake up call perfectly suited to its position on the album. From there, the record continues with more upbeat tunes like Pressure and Brighter. Later tracks like Conspiracy and Franklin provide a darker contrast to preceding songs."

"The band’s overall sound is quite upbeat and not at all depressing. All of the band’s members do their part extremely well: the drummer’s fills are on time and crisp while the guitarists keep up with the frequently changing rhythms with ease."

AbsolutePunk: 71%
Allmusic: 4/5 stars

Kerrang!: 3/5
NME: 5/10
Spin: 3.5/5
Stylus Magazine: B+

- Was certified Platinum in the US
- Gold in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK

Jason Lymangrover of Allmusic gave the album 4 out of 5 stars and commented that, "Ultimately, this disc has enormous crossover potential, and will probably appeal to those who are fans of the genre, and for those who aren't, there's a good chance of it becoming a guilty pleasure."

Gareth Dobson of Drowned in Sound gave the album 4 out of 10 stars and said, "At 38 minutes long, it's mercifully brief, but still manages to feel like a double album for those who endure it. That is, those who don't manage to forget that it's on the stereo at all. People, get your pop-punk thrills somewhere else. At least somewhere where there are actual thrills to be had."

- Certified gold by the RIAA on January 19, 2010
- Brand New Eyes won the best album award at The Kerrang Awards

Andrew Leahey of Allmusic gave the album a positive review, stating, "Brand New Eyes presents Paramore as a stronger, leaner, and altogether more consistent band."

Alternative Press awarded the album 4.5/5 and Scott Heisel praised the improvement of the album over its predecessor; "Riot! was ridiculously top-loaded, with an unmemorable second half. Eyes astonishes from start to finish, with the bouncy and confessional "Looking Up" and the immensely powerful track "All I Wanted" showing up as diamonds in an already gem-covered rough".

Our chosen band and song

The band we have chosen is Paramore. Paramore is an American pop-punk band from Franklin, Tennessee who formed in 2004. The band consists of lead vocalist Hayley Williams, lead guitarist Josh Farro, bassist Jeremy Davis, drummer Zac Farro, and rhythm guitarist Taylor York. They have three albums, They realesed their first album, All We Know Is Falling, in 2005. Their secound album, Riot! was then released in 2007. Their third album, Brand New Eyes, was released  on September 29, 2009.

The song we have chosen to produce our music video for is on the Riot! album. It is called "We Are Broken" and it does not have a music video made by Paramore. We chose the song partly due to this but also because we are both very big fans of the song. The song refers to the fact that we as humans, make mistakes and we end up losing ourselves in lies and violence. We live lies to the point where reality is blurred and we begin to question our morals.

Ideas for our music video

In this video, Britney Spears is not in it, instead she has an animated version of herself, in an animated world. This is not a recurring thing for Britney, as it's the only animated video she's done. This produced mystery for her fans and makes it very original for her.

This video by the Pussycat Dolls shows clear sex appeal, aiming to attract boys yet their music mainly targets girls. They are wearing revealing outfits, showing their legs, stomachs and the clothes are very low cut. Midway through the video they take some clothes off to make their outfits even more revealing. Raunchy dance moves are used throughout the video also to create sex appeal. It has a sepia toned setting and a different version of the video is shown with smoke coming from some of the dolls during some sequences, and finally the floor bursting into digitally-added fire in the last sequences.

The next video is showing the artist acting in the video, rather than just singing or watching it themselves. The video is of Justin Timberlake in Sexy Back. It was directed by Michael Haussman and features Spanish actress Elena Anaya. The video was filmed in June 2006 and shot in a luxury building in Barcelona, Spain. Artists may choose to do this as it could feature a personal story, and this will allow the audience to engage with it on a better level.

Influences for our music video

We have researched many different kinds of music video, all having a range of ideas that we think are either effective, memorable or clever.

Bob Dylan- Subterranean Homesick Blues

The first picture is at 0.02 seconds, which is zooming out to show a man holding a large number of cards. Throughout the entire video, the same man is holding the same bunch of cards. The cards have words on them that he drops once they have been sung in the song. This goes on until 2.03 when the man runs out of cards as the song finishes.
The last screenshot is at 2.08, where you see two men walking away in different directions. The men are at the side having a conversation all the way through the video.

There have been many other people that have copied the idea, such as:
The 1992 Tim Robbins film Bob Robert features Robbins in the title role as a right-wing folk singer who uses Dylan's cue-card concept for the song "Wall Street Rap".
The video clip for Bloodhound Gang's 1999 song "Mope", off their album Hooray For Boobies, imitates Dylan's use of cue cards in the "Subterranean" clip.
The American punk band Anti-Flag used the concept in the clip for their song "Turncoat".
Australian comedy team The Chaser parodied the clip twice. The first featured Chris Taylor advertising the second-half of the 2007 series return for their show, The Chaser's War on Everything. The second parody, aired during Episode 14, featured Andrew Hansen in a skit about APEC.

The video was ranked at number 7 in Rolling Stone's October 1993 list of "100 Top Music Videos". The original clip was actually the opening segment of D. A. Pennebaker's film, Don't Look Back, which was a documentary on Bob Dylan's 1965 tour of England. In the film, Dylan, who came up with the idea, holds up cue cards for the audience, with selected words and phrases from the lyrics.

The three locations for the"cue card" clip as seen in Don't Look Back.

This video is very memorable and we would like to attempt to do a similar video. We plan to use it in the second verse of "We Are Broken", depending on how successful we can make it.

Adele - Chasing Pavements

In the first screenshot, it's at 0.08 and there are two people on the pavement unconscious. By 0.13 you can see the surroundings, there are a number of cars and smoke is filling the air, Adele is over looking the incident from her car. At 0.44 you see other people running over to help the couple. The chorus starts at 0.55 which is when they start moving as though they're stood up. You then see an ambulance at 1.46 with the ambulance crew helping. Another shadow appears at 2.02, which portrays her other lover. He soon goes again and her and the original man make up. They go back to being unconscious at 2.21 and from then Adele stands and observes the incident.

The music video, directed by Matthew Cullen earned a MTV Music Video Award for Best Choreography. It centres around a car crash where the couple who were in the car are lying on the pavement, motionless. During the choruses, the camera shows the victims from a birds-eye view coming alive and move as if they were stood up. The couple reenact their relationship, showing how they meet, the woman having another lover, him forgiving her and what happens before the accident. The video ends with both people on stretchers with ambulance crews tending to them. Adele is not one of the car crash victims; instead she is an onlooker.

Target Audience

As we are using the band Paramore for our music video, our target audience are the fans of Paramore. Paramore come from the USA, but are increasingly becoming known world wide with a larger fan base. The target audience is younger than most bands as Paramore are young themselves. They have been known to say in interviews that they feel closer to their fans than other bands are because they're similar ages. We felt the target audience ranges from the ages of 13-20 and both male and female. Many different types of people enjoy listening to paramore, whether it's because of the lyrics, the beat or they find the band inspirational.

Due to the target audience ranging so much, it's difficult to produce a music video to suit everyone's preferences.

Original Idea

At the end of year 12, Nicole and I had another idea for our music video. We chose the pop genre rather than punk rock. We chose a song by Lady GaGa, because we both find her very interesting by what she does, sings about and wears as she is very ostentatious as a person. We chose the song Paparazzi, as we both really like the song and thought we could come up with some good ideas for it.

Narrative:
The girl singing as Lady GaGa is stalking a man who she loves. It starts off with him listening to his ipod on a train, then as the music starts we see on the ipod that he begins listening to the song. The train is very busy and in the middle of a crowd is the girl singing. He gets off the train, as does she and she follows him. When the chorus starts, shes sat in a car outside his house watching him and his girlfriend with binoculars. she then imagines her being the girlfriend. The second verse is her sitting outside a pub on the seafront, with a large number of empty glasses on her table, showing she's been there waiting for a long time. She hides behind a menu while he walks past on the beach. As he walks past she begins to follow him again.

Costume:
On the train, he is wearing a suit with the tie loosened and the top button undone, letting the audience assume he's coming back from work. The suit suggests he has a good job, earning a lot of money which is more attractive. In the first verse she sings "leather and jeans, garage glamorous", we decided because of this, she'd wear jeans, a leather jacket and black knee high boots. This makes her look sexy and also stands out as everyone else on the train would be wearing suits.
In the chorus, she's wearing something more Lady GaGa like, having over sized bows in her hair and different clothes on. He's wearing a baggy T-shirt and tracksuit bottoms as he's lounging in his house. We imagined the girlfriend to be very pretty, and wearing figure hugging clothes to make her look sexy, with long brown curly hair.

Location:
We thought that platform 3 at Dover Priory train station would be most suitable for the first verse as it's usually busy and that's where we both imagined it to be set.

His house would have been at my house, as there is available parking opposite my house and when the curtains are open, there is a clear view into the windows. We had an idea that maybe she could be stood in the grave yard opposite my house because we imagine Lady GaGa to do something like that but we decided against it as the actress said she wouldn't be comfortable in a grave yard.

The pub she was sat in would have been the tables outside the Kings Head in Deal, as it overlooks the beach and would have been very appropriate for the video.

Ideas on Casting the Characters, Costume and Location

Characters:

We decided it would be best to have a Drama student playing the girl as she is the main character. We wanted her to have very dark brown hair, possibly even black. The girl we chose was Louise. We made sure she knew the song well and the band itself. She is fortunately a fan of Paramore so we didn't need to educate her much further about them. She already owns the type of clothes we wanted her to wear which was also very fortunate.
Chosing the boy was much harder as the only boy in the Drama class was not willing to be in the music video. We then asked boys who looked suitable for the part. We were thinking about using Jordan, who we were previously working with, as he was very willing to act. However we thought he didn't look the part enough, as we were hoping for someone with long hair but Jordan had recently had his hair cut very short. We then chose Jack, who we feel fits the part perfectly. There are no male lyrics so he doesn't need to mime any of the words.

Costume:

The girl from Paramore wears quite dark and simple clothes, but can also wear very flamboyant and ostentatious clothes so she stands out. This gave us various ideas as to what Louise should wear. After a long discussion, we chose to have her wearing a different outfit in each verse and chorus. This meant she could wear dark and simple clothes but could also wear bright and loud colours.

Location:

We had orginially chosen and planned to set our music video at a warehouse in a park in Sandwich, but we then found out that it was having building work done to it. We then thought about some farm land in Ash. It's issolated so fits in with our theme and original idea.
We also thought about filming in Shepherdswell, it's also very issolated and has a lot of woodland. We then decided against this idea as it was too far away from my house and even further for Nicole.

Location

We had originally chosen and planned to set our music video at a warehouse in a park in Sandwich. When we went down to take pictures and have a proper look inside, we found that it was having building work done to it, so we could not film there. Another place we were thinking about filming in was farmland in Ash. It's issolated so fits the song well and would work with the idea we originally had as the warehouse was also issolated.

We thought about other places like Victoria Park in Deal, but we felt it was too public so would be difficult to keep concentrated and on task. It also wouldn't work with the song if the characters are around people.

We also thought about filming in Shepherdswell, as it is very issolated and has shadowed and woodland areas, but we decided it was too difficult to get to for Nicole as she lives in Broadstairs and Danielle because she lives in Deal. Here are some pictures anyway:
